Link deals in a sequence (so the automation can move them)

Updated 2026-08-10

In two lines: turn on Deal linking in the sequence's Settings tab and each enrolled person gets tied to their most recent open deal. From there the automation can move that deal, archive it, and stop on its own when it's won or lost.

Why turn it on

A sequence runs on people. Your funnel, on the other hand, moves deals. Deal linking is the bridge between the two: without it, the sequence can write to a contact but can't touch their opportunity. With it, one automation nurtures the person and keeps the funnel up to date — no one has to drag cards by hand after each email.

  • The Change the deal stage and Archive the deal action steps act on the linked deal.
  • The sequence's activities are logged on that deal's timeline, so its history stays complete.
  • The person leaves the sequence automatically when the deal is marked won or lost — you stop chasing someone who already bought (or already said no).
  • The deal variables ({{dealTitle}}, {{dealValue}}, {{dealCurrency}}, {{dealStage}}) fill in with real data instead of coming out empty.

Turn it on in the sequence

  • Go to CRM > Sequences and open the sequence.
  • Open the Settings tab and find the Deal linking card.
  • Choose Link each person's most recent open deal. The other option, Don't link, leaves the sequence working on people only.
  • Optionally, narrow it down with Pipeline: leave Any to search across all your funnels, or pick one so only its deals are eligible.
  • The setting saves on the sequence and applies to every enrollment from that moment on.
You can also turn it on without leaving the editor: a Change the deal stage or Archive the deal step in a sequence that doesn't link deals shows the notice "This step won't do anything: the sequence doesn't link deals" with a Turn on button right there.

Which deal gets linked

The rule is deliberately simple, so you can predict it. For each person being enrolled, the CRM picks the deal that meets all of this:

  • It's open — deals already won, lost or archived are never linked.
  • That person is a contact on it — including when they're the secondary contact, not the main one.
  • It's the most recently updated one of them all. If a pipeline was set, only that pipeline's deals compete.
  • If the person has no open deal that fits, they're still enrolled — just without a linked deal, and the deal steps are skipped for them.
The link is resolved once, at enrollment time, and it doesn't get re-evaluated afterwards. If the person's deal is created after you enrolled them, that enrollment stays without a deal: remove them from the sequence and enroll them again to pick it up.

Check it worked

When you enroll people, the enrollment dialog shows the sequence's current state — Linking to the most recent open deal (with the pipeline, if you set one) or No deal linking — plus a Change link to fix it before confirming. Careful: what you change there is saved on the sequence, not just on this enrollment. Once confirmed, the toast tells you how many people were enrolled, how many were linked to a deal, and how many were skipped.

To review it later, open the sequence's Contacts tab: the Deal column shows each person's linked deal (a dash when there's none), and clicking it opens the deal. Linking applies to every way of enrolling, including the automatic sync of a linked list — so a dynamic list feeding the sequence also links deals.

If one person usually has deals in several funnels (for example, a recurring client), set the Pipeline in the linking card. It's the difference between the sequence moving the deal you meant and moving whichever one happened to be touched last.

Next step: build the steps that will use the link in Automate follow-up: Sequences and booking pages, and enroll a ready-made audience with Filter People by their deals (label, pipeline, stage, status, owner).
