Choose the cover of your video (Reels, TikTok and Facebook)

Updated 2026-08-25

In two lines: on posts with video, the Cover card in Visual Assets lets you pick the exact frame or upload your own image. Each channel gets what it supports, and if you don't touch it, the platform picks the cover for you.

A Reel lives or dies on its first frame. Left to the platform, the cover is whatever frame happened to be at the start — often a blurred face or a half-finished title. Choosing it takes ten seconds and is the cheapest thing you can do for the reach of a video.

How do I choose the cover?

  • Open the post in Social Media > Planner and load the video in Visual Assets.
  • Check that the format is Reel / Video or Feed / Post: the Cover card only shows up on video posts in those two formats.
  • Click the Cover card. The Video cover panel opens with two tabs.
  • In Video frame, drag the slider until the preview shows the moment you want.
  • Or switch to Image and use Upload image or Choose from library to use your own graphic.
  • Look at the chips at the bottom: each one tells you what that channel is going to receive.
  • Click Apply and save the post.
To go back to the automatic cover, open the panel again and use Remove cover. Remove image only clears the uploaded graphic and keeps the frame you had chosen.

Which channel receives which?

Not every network accepts both options, and MB Suite doesn't hide that: the chips inside the panel show it channel by channel, with the platforms you selected for this post.

ChannelImageVideo frame
Instagram (Reels)YesYes
TikTok (Business connection)YesYes
TikTok (Login Kit)NoYes
Facebook (video)YesNo
Stories, LinkedIn, Google Business, XNot supportedNot supported
You can define both at the same time, and that's the smart move when a post goes out on several channels: where both are supported the image wins, and the frame stays as the fallback for the channels that only accept a frame. That's why the panel never forces you to choose one or the other.
If your TikTok connection is TikTok (Login Kit), the chip turns amber and says frame only: that connection doesn't accept a custom image, only a frame. Either pick a frame, or upgrade the connection from Settings > Integrations with Update connection on the TikTok card. See Integrations: what you can connect and how they work.

What image works as a cover?

Vertical 9:16, the same shape as the video, in JPG, PNG or WebP. The Requirements list inside the panel shows the exact sizes and maximum weight accepted — it's the source of truth, because each network sets its own limits.

The panel validates the image as soon as you load it. A message in red is an error and keeps Apply disabled until you replace the image; a message in amber is a warning —for example, an image that isn't 9:16 and could get cropped— and lets you continue.

What happens if I don't choose one?

Nothing breaks: the card shows Automatic · chosen by the platform and each network picks the cover on its own, exactly as it did before. The cover is optional — it's there for when the automatic one doesn't do the video justice.

Define the cover before scheduling. When a post moves to Scheduled, MB Suite freezes the content that's going out, cover included. If you change it afterwards, move the post back to Approved —that cancels the scheduling— and schedule it again. Once it's published, the cover can only be changed from the network's own app.
On Facebook the cover is applied right after the video finishes uploading, and it's best-effort: if Facebook rejects it, the post is still published with the automatic cover instead of failing. If you removed the video from the post or changed the format to Story, the cover is discarded with it.
Reuse covers as an editorial asset: save the graphic in the Media Library and pick it with Choose from library. A recognizable cover style makes a client's grid read as a series instead of a pile of unrelated videos.
