In two lines: a template is an email design you create once and reuse. In Email Marketing > Templates you build them and have them ready to choose when sending a campaign or a flow.
How do I create a template?
Go to Email Marketing > Templates and create a new one. You give it a name and design the content in the editor. When you create a campaign, the template becomes available to select, without designing anything again.
How do I stay organized when I have many?
You can assign labels to each template and then use Filter by label to find them fast. Labels are managed from Manage labels.
Create base templates for your usual sends (newsletter, promotion, notice) and just change the content in each campaign. You save time and keep a consistent image.
